XII. Genealogical Trivia:

Through my maternal grandfather, Marshall P. James, I am a descendant of Hinton James. He was the first student at UNC Chapel Hill on February 12, 1795.

My grandfather lived from 1902-1963. His father was Alexander Long James March 31, 1855-1928. Alexander was the son of Dr. Hand James Nov. 21, 1825-March 14, 1862. His father was Hinton James Sept. 20, 1776-Aug. 22, 1847.

As a gifted writer, his name appeared frequently in the essay "Honor Book." He was also a prominent member of the first "Debating Society." After graduation, Hinton James became a civil engineer. The first jetties on the Cape Fear were constructed under his supervision. He was a member of the State Legislature for three terms--- 1807, 1808, and 1809. Year later, a dormitory built in his honor on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill.

His father John James was one of the "Donors" of the UNC. John James (died 1799) was the son of Isaac James who came to Onslow County, NC around 1730 from Wales.

Through my maternal grandmother, Mary Lois James, I am a descendant of the Scottish Nobleman Robert the Bruce. BTW, Bruce did not betray William Wallace as the film showed. He was betrayed by one of his servants.

My paternal grandfather, Francis Patrick Crowe, grew up in Marietta, Ohio. When there was not a strike, his dad worked across the river in the coal minds of WV. Grandpa Crowe worked for the Ohio Electric Company during his high school years. He created the layout for where each electric light in town was going.

After he and my grandmother were married, it was not many years before they moved to Magnolia, OH where he continued working for the same company. Grandpa Crowe was the first to graduate from high school. My dad was the first to graduate from college.

I'm one of 50 plus Crowe grandchildren. My godfather, Austin Crowe, flew 52 bombing missions over Europe in WW II.

My dad was the first college educated engineer for Mack Truck and invented a gasket. It solved a major repair problem back then and continues in use today.

With Mack Truck in Hagerstown, MD, my dad was a member of the Baltimore Colts Fan Club. Many of the football players of the Colts' golden years played golf with members of the fan club and I would be a caddy. One of dad's high school friends turned pro and through him we met others who played for the NY Giants.

XIII. Personal Interests:

Travel, sports, power lifting, taekwondo, guitar playing, computers, working on my car, etc.

Martial Arts

From December of 2000 until June of 2002, I was a member of the US Chung Do Kwan . Chung Do Kwan is a powerful and graceful martial arts discipline. Techniques are taught to be implemented and completed with flowing, graceful and powerful movements.

During that time I earned my 9th gup through my 5th gup belts. In the Spring of 2001, I won the loudest yell award. In October 2001, I was student of the month and earned my 7th gup belt. In February 2002, I was given the perseverance award and earned my 5th gup belt.

On April 11-13, I attended the 2002 USCDKA National Leadership Training Conference in Lake Wales, Fl with Grand master Edward B. Sell 9th Dan, Grand Master Brenda J. Sell 8th Dan, Grand Master Hea Man Park, Grand master Jim Covensky as well as world class performer and martial arts celebrity Ernie Reyes, Sr. Also, we celebrated Grand master Edward B. Sell becoming the highest ranked Black Belt in the world in Taekwondo outside the Korean nationality.

On May, 2002 I participated in a 3 hour Kwan 'Jang Tour seminar with Grand master Edward B. Sell, and Grand Master Brenda. Sell at Jen's Do Jang in Rocky Mount, NC.

Later, we joined Byung Lee's King Tiger TKD Academy when we moved to Goldsboro. Of the 8 Korean Kwans that came together to form the WTF, Chung Do Kwan is the oldest. Ji Do Kwan is 10 years younger.

Due to several reasons, my boys and I took a break from TKD from the summer of 2002 and August of 2003. During that time, I became part of The Christian Martial Arts Association December 12, 2002.

Due to taking a break from TKD, we restarted all over again in August of 2003. I earned my 9th gup through my 2nd gup belts within 20 months. More information can be found on the King Tiger Association Page.

The techniques of Ji Do Kwan are similar to those of other Tae Kwon Do schools but they have not been modernized, simplified, or adapted to emphasize effectiveness in tournament sparring. The stances of Ji Do Kwan are especially long, low, and stable. Its kicks, blocks, and strikes are longer and more circular than those of many Tae Kwon Do styles, and its footwork is especially fluid and graceful. Because of its traditional techniques, the school is physically demanding, but its practitioners experience the rewards of an especially beautiful, effective, and satisfying martial art. Until the 20th century, Ji Do Kwan was studied by the Korean aristocracy, who learned this fighting art for spiritual as well as practical ends--similar in some ways to the training of knights in medieval Europe. The school encourages personal growth in many different areas including, but not limited to, means of self-defense. We practice TKD at the Goldsboro location.

In September of 2003, I competed in ETF National Tournament and received a trophy for Excellent Performance.

In May of 2004, I competed in the King Tiger Good Will Games and received a trophy for Superior Performance

In May of 2005, I competed in the King Tiger Good Will Games and received a trophy for Superior Performance

Amateur Power Lifting.

When I was living in Spring Hope, North Carolina, the owner of the gym encouraged me to take up amateur power lifting. So, I tried it out for two years.

In the Spring of 1999, I won third place Masters Heavyweight in the 4th Annual Body Perfection Biggest Bench Press Showdown with my third attempt of 275 lbs after missing my second attempt of 250 lbs.

In the Spring of 2000, I won first place Masters Middleweight in the 5th Annual Body Perfection Gym Biggest Bench Press with my third attempt of 315 lbs. My bench press shirt split during the event.
